Duties and Responsibilities:
Facilities & Booking Management
- Manage bookings and scheduling system for all Makerspace facilities.
- Ensure all spaces are prepared for scheduled use with charged and functional equipment.
- Monitor usage and ensure proper care, cleanliness, and security of all Makerspace areas.
Equipment and Consumable Stock Maintenance & Administration
- Check equipment before and after each use; store and secure appropriately.
- Conduct regular stock takes of equipment and consumables.
- Ensuring the timeous procurement of consumables and tracking actual spend on them
- Report damaged or lost equipment to IT or campus management
- Manage general repairs and maintenance of all multimedia equipment and tools
Technical Support & User Assistance
- Provide hands-on support to students and staff using photographic, video, sound, VR and 3D printing equipment.
- Troubleshoot technical issues and escalate where necessary.
- Provide setup support during class sessions, workshops, and special events.
Training & Skills Development
- Collaborate with the Head Academic on campus and relevant Heads of Disciplines (HOD’s) to plan and deliver training workshops to expose and develop staff.
- Promote the use of the Makerspace as a learning environment to academic teams and students
- Printing Services
- Manage the end-to-end 3D printing process
- Manage the routine maintenance of 3D printers.
- Procure and manage stock (e.g., resin, toner) needed for printing.
Competencies Required:
- Superior communication (written and verbal) and organisational skills.
- Technical: Skilled in operating and maintaining multimedia equipment (cameras, VR, 3D printers, sound gear), with a working knowledge of related software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, 3D modelling tools)
- Problem solving; Able to diagnose and resolve technical issues quickly and effectively, using initiative and judgement in high-use, time-sensitive environments.
- Communication skills; Communicates clearly and effectively with a diverse audience (students, lecturers, leadership), both in person and through documentation, guides, and training materials.
- Planning & Organisational Skills: Capable of managing multiple tasks including equipment scheduling, maintenance, inventory, and workshop planning within tight academic timelines.
- Student / staff Experience: Demonstrates patience, approachability, and responsiveness when assisting students and staff, creating a welcoming and supportive learning environment.
- Adaptability & Learning Agility: Adaptability & Learning Agility: Comfortable with rapid changes in technology and able to continuously learn and apply new tools or methods relevant to multimedia and education.
- Collaboration & Teamwork: Works effectively with academic staff, campus operations, and external partners to ensure the Makerspace aligns with broader educational goals.
Minimum Education Requirements:
- A Higher Certificate (with specialised multimedia skills), Diploma or Degree in Multimedia, Photography, Digital Media, Visual Communication or a related field.
Minimum Work Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of 2 years proven experience in photography, videography and multimedia production.
- A portfolio demonstrating work in both photography and video.
- Minimum of 2 years experience instructing and supporting students or groups in creative technology use.
- Minimum of 2 years experience managing equipment, stock and booking schedules.
- Knowledge and willingness to learn about sound production, VR and 3D printing tools and other new media technology.
